Respiratory signals are one of the key parameters for patient monitors, posing significant challenges for manufacturers during development. These challenges include confirming the accuracy of respiratory monitoring and detecting subtle changes in respiratory signals. In response to these needs, WhaleTeq announced today (28) that the SECG 5.0 AIO Multi Vital Signal Simulator has been upgraded. It can now be paired with a newly released respiration module, expanding the simulation range of impedance respiratory signal and optimizing variation resolution.

Expanded Respiratory Signal Simulation Range for Testing the Accuracy of Patient Monitors
Individual differences can result in varied respiratory signals. For instance, moist skin can lead to lower baseline impedance values, while higher baseline impedance values may result from water and fat composition in the human body. When paired with the respiration module, the SECG 5.0 AIO expands the respiratory signal simulation range from the original 500Ω to 2500Ω to a new range of 100Ω to 4500Ω. This expanded range allows for the simulation of both average human impedance values and extreme conditions, verifying the accuracy of patient monitors in detecting respiratory signals.

Optimized Variation Resolution for Improving the Sensitivity of Patient Monitors
Respiratory patterns also vary among individuals, necessitating observation of respiratory variability—frequency, amplitude, and the combination of both—to identify potential respiratory issues such as irregular or shallow breathing. With the respiration module, the SECG 5.0 AIO expands the variability range to 10Ω and allows for adjustments in a minimum step size of 0.05Ω within the range of 0.0Ω to 5Ω. This enhancement enables testing of patient monitors' responses to subtle changes in respiratory signals, helping developers improve detection sensitivity.

Manufacturers cannot predict how each user's vital signs will present; they can only ensure the required accuracy and reliability of patient monitors to meet diverse monitoring needs. WhaleTeq is committed to continuously updating our test equipment for working alongside manufacturers to ensure medical devices are always ready for deployment.
